Development of an Old Childrens Home into Flats and Three New Build Houses on the Old Tennis Courts
Bitterne, Southampton, Hampshire
Working for a developer who purchased the property at auction we designed a scheme to convert the old Victorian building into nine flats, with a penthouse flat in the roof space having views out to Southampton water.
The garden to the rear had a couple of old tennis courts and this provided the ideal location for a terrace of three houses. The idea behind the terrace was to take segments of an orange and displace them to each other. This would serve to direct views from upstairs towards the river and at the same time give privacy to each rear facing balcony.
Working with the principal that the best views were to be enjoyed from upstairs the rear of the first floor became a living room, with bedrooms to the front and a master suite on the second floor. The ground floor offers a study, integral garage and kitchen diner giving out onto a garden terrace.
The scheme achieved a unanimous vote of approval from the planning committee.
